Opening on Friday, June 5th at 7 pm
Gallery Grindelallee 129
Hamburg Hoheluft

In a time of social and political tension, the three Hamburg-based photographers Dr. Britta Kohl-Boas, Oliver Jockers, and Bastian Hertel embark on a journey across Germany using a Deutschlandticket (Germany Ticket). They explore places and interstitial spaces away from the major cities using local public transport.

The project DEUTSCHLANDWEIT 49/58/63 explores the meaning of home. It is presented not as a fixed place, but as a subjective experience situated between memory and future, as well as closeness and foreignness.

What makes this project special is the interplay of three individual photographic voices from different experiences and perspectives. From these three viewpoints emerges a multifaceted dialogue about perception and reality. Their shared travels and observations shape a collective vision of Germany.

The photographs are created in direct dialogue with people, architecture, and landscapes. Photography thus becomes an act, not merely seeing, but engaging in a relationship. It not only documents places but also senses atmospheres, captures tensions, and opens up new perspectives on the seemingly familiar.

The aim of this project is a collaborative photobook that unites all three photographic approaches into a cohesive visual whole. Ruth Stoltenberg and Peter Bialobrzeski will guide the three photographers in developing the photographic concept and creating the photobook.

The concept

Inspired by a map of Germany from the 1997/1998 timetable of the German Railway, the idea arose to explore all of Germany as a group of three.

In the further development of the project, three photographic approaches were defined and consistently pursued. All three photographers aimed to travel to each quadrant at least once – together or alone.

On site, they used the regional public transport to explore the surroundings according to their respective photographic concepts.

Dr. Britta Kohl-Boas is a freelance photographer based in Hamburg, Germany. Her work explores the intersection of personal memory, collective history, and the changing cultural environment.

During her 2023/2024 academic year at the Hamburg Photography Workshop under the direction of Michael Grieve, she began her ongoing project "The Flood," which traces the emotional and historical legacy of the great Hamburg storm surge of 1962. This work continues the themes she had already developed in her earlier series "Haymat Wilhelmsburg" during the 2021/2022 masterclass with Andreas Herzau.

Since April 2026, she has been completing a study year at the Ostkreuz School for Photography under Peter Bialobrzeski.

Her photographic work was created in collaboration with Oliver Jockers.

“The Green Ring under pressure” nominated for the Georg Koppmann Prize 2026 (shortlist).

Her photographs have won awards in several competitions, been published in magazines, and exhibited internationally.

In addition to her own artistic practice, she is involved in several photography collectives. There she has successfully organized photography festivals, curated exhibitions, and led guided tours.

Oliver Jockers is an experienced street and documentary photographer. His photographic work is characterized by an exploration of the theme of "home".

In his photographs, he captures the complexity and change of life in familiar surroundings. In addition to his own photographic work, he is actively involved in several photographic groups.

Oliver Jockers has curated and realized numerous solo and group exhibitions.

His long-term photographic development has been shaped by continuous collaboration with renowned photographers: He participated in workshops with Anders Petersen, Mark Power, Herbert Piel, Rolf Nobel, Peter Turnley and Gerd Ludwig and completed a one-year masterclass with Andreas Herzau at Freelens in Hamburg in 2022/2023.

Together with Dr. Britta Kohl-Boas, his photographic work “The Green Ring under Pressure” was nominated for the Georg Koppmann Prize 2026 (shortlist).

Bastian Hertel is a freelance photographer from Hamburg who has dedicated himself to artistic documentary photography since 2012.

Having grown up between the North Sea island of Borkum and the Rhine-Main metropolitan areas in Hesse, he is still shaped by the tension between life in the city and the longing for retreat to the countryside – a motif that is often reflected in his work as a dualism of proximity to and distance from the big city.

His series such as “adrift”, “DISCO KEBAB” and “LOVECITYHATECITY” explore urban spaces, social fault lines and personal projections and are often understood by Hertel as “photographic windows into the soul”.

Hertel's photography is characterized by a clear formal language – geometry, subframes, figures precisely placed in space – and combines this with a strongly subjective, emotional approach.

After many years of consistently working in black and white, he opened himself up to color with “DISCO KEBAB” – as an expression of escapism, the desire for contrast and a new view of the world.

His work has been exhibited in Hamburg, Berlin, Minneapolis, and Providence, among other places. In 2022, he attended Andreas Herzau's masterclass and participated in the group exhibition MIXTAPE 22 at Freelens under Herzau's guidance. Bastian Hertel curates group exhibitions, coaches, and volunteers his time to lead photography workshops for young people.
